Limited scope representation gets a boost

Wisconsin Supreme CourtOn April 4, the Wisconsin Supreme Court voted unanimously to adopt a series of changes proposed in Petition 13-10 to expand support for limited scope representation arrangements between lawyers and clients. The changes, which take effect in January 2015, have broad support in the access to justice community and have been a key priority for the Commission. Among other changes, the new rules will provide a process for entering and withdrawing limited appearances in court as well as for document preparation by attorneys for self-represented parties (aka “ghostwriting”). The Commission and supporters of these changes hope that the result will less costly ways for more people to get at least some help from lawyers to resolve their legal problems.

Expanded education for judges, lawyers and the public will be a key next step for making sure that these changes have the intended effect.

The State Bar of Wisconsin has an excellent summary of the Supreme Court’s action here.

A copy of the court’s final order is expected to be released soon. We will update this post to add a link to the order as soon as it is available
